Black Irish Pub Crawl: Centering Black Joy, Business, and Community in Boston
Every March, Boston turns green for St. Patrick’s Day – but for many of us, the day hasn’t always felt like it was made with our communities in mind. The Black Irish Pub Crawl changes that story. It takes the energy of St. Patrick’s Day and centers it on Black joy, Black ownership, and Black-led community building across the city.
Launched as a fresh take on the typical Boston bar crawl, Black Irish has grown into an annual tradition that sells well over a thousand tickets and moves tens of thousands of dollars through Black-owned businesses in just a few hours. It’s not just about hopping from bar to bar – it’s about making sure our dollars, our presence, and our culture are visible and valued in the heart of the city.
Putting Black-Owned Businesses at the Center
The pub crawl intentionally routes participants through Black-owned bars, restaurants, and venues, directing a powerful wave of foot traffic, spending, and visibility to local entrepreneurs. In a short window of time during last year’s event, attendees spent more than $20,000 at Black-owned establishments, showing how community-focused events can drive real economic impact.
That kind of impact doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from building relationships with business owners, understanding what they need to succeed during an event, and designing an experience that benefits both guests and hosts. From food and drinks to games and challenges at each stop, the entire crawl is built to highlight the creativity and excellence of Boston’s Black hospitality scene.
More Than a Crawl: A Full-Day Experience
Black Irish is now a full experience: an afternoon pub crawl followed by an evening day party that keeps the energy going long after the last stop. The crawl typically runs from 12 PM to 5 PM, leading straight into a day party from 5 PM to 9 PM at a central downtown venue.
Teams add another layer of fun and connection. Community partners like Boston Young Black Professionals, Teachers’ Lounge, The B-Sidez, and Team HBCU step up as team captains, turning the event into a citywide meetup for professionals, creatives, and culture-shapers. Whether you come with a full squad or solo, you’re going to leave with new connections, new favorite spots, and a deeper sense of belonging in Boston.
Community, Culture, and Intentional Connection
At its core, Black Irish is about community. It proves that when you design events intentionally – with culture, safety, and inclusion in mind – you can transform a traditional holiday into something that truly reflects the people who live here.
Participants don’t just show up for drinks; they show up to support. They show up to meet other Black professionals, creatives, and entrepreneurs. They show up to see themselves reflected in spaces that haven’t always felt welcoming, and to claim their place in Boston’s social and cultural landscape.
Why Events Like Black Irish Matter
Events like the Black Irish Pub Crawl are a blueprint for what equitable, community-centered nightlife can look like in Boston and beyond. They drive revenue to local businesses, build lasting relationships, and change the narrative about who gets to take up space in the city on marquee days like St. Patrick’s Day.
Most importantly, they remind us that celebration can be purposeful. When we combine joy with intention – and fun with economic impact – we create experiences that people remember, talk about, and come back to year after year.
If your organization is ready to create events that don’t just fill a room, but actually build community and deliver measurable impact, let’s connect!
